  HARO, RIOJA'S CAPITAL WINE

We can go back to the year 1902 where was specified the Rioja denomination in the Charter of Miranda:" Everyman of Logroņo, Najera or Rioja land who want to pass goods to Alava…". So Rioja denomination is related to Oja River as a differentiated local region.

Soon Haro was established as population head of this region, as it seems to define the jarrero concept, like native of Haro, which can be related to oja-ojarra-jarrero.

The efforts for promoting Rioja wine, which have been done from Haro, started a long time ago. As well as champagne had its clergyman Don Perignon, and Bordeaux had its abbot Rozier in our wine was significant another clergyrman, Quintano, de La Bastida. But what it has characterized Haro as Rioja capital are natural conditions, whose first expression is its wines and men who are oriented to a total enological operation, producing grapes, making wine, maturing and bottling.

Other key natural conditions in Rioja wine elaboration as a high valued product are:
  • · Soils. . Haro is located over clay calcareous soils (the best for vineyards and wineries), wineries are not only just the centenarian buildings, but also the endlessly corridors, from medieval time, wines were stored in good conditions. Nowadays a lot of them are deserted. There are also a proportion of alluvial soils adequate to establish communications.

  • · Geographical conditions. P. For the French merchants it was the first zone of high quality wines, when getting through the peninsula.

  • · Climatic conditions. It is the most northern point of the peninsula, highly illuminated and a meeting point for the Cantabrian breeze and the Mediterranean clarity.

The historical architecture of the Haro wineries is diverse. Using planes and cross sections, we summarily exhibit it:

  • · A type. Medieval wineries located in the old town. There are lot of them and also almost deserted. Depth houses, ground floors or limited length palace and without elaboration barrel. Saint Thomas Hill. There are lot of traces from the medieval age. As a sample "Las Bezaras" of Caja Rioja.
